Reflections on the National Teacher Mentorship

30 teachers journeyed to Bell Shakespeare HQ from across Australia to become students again; learning active teaching principles and innovative Shakespeare strategies over four intensive days.

"As a teacher with nearly two decades of experience in the profession, I am used to professional learning being highly theoretical and difficult to implement in real terms. Bell Shakespeare took the strategies that work with students and then taught them to teachers in such a physical and dynamic manner that they will not be forgetten. Part of providing students with a deep understanding of the concept or subject matter is about creating 'learning that sticks' and I can confidently say that the practical strategies and high level of physical involvement and practical discussions have created a professional learning experience that will never be forgotten and will impact the next twenty years of my teaching life. The learning 'will stick'".

"I am feeling so enthused and excited to get back into the classroom. I feel like I have been lifted and valued as a teacher and equipped with a new set of skills to take on in the classroom. I have never been able to take the time for myself in any professional learning before and it really makes a huge difference."

"The most surprising part was the self-esteem boost. I did not expect it to be so physical and movement-based or how effective the activities taught would be with students who are not on an academic pathway. I am excited to share what I have learned with my coworkers. It has renewed my enthusiasm for teaching."

"I discovered how it feels like to be a life long learner and walk in a student's shoes. I plan to include the many practical activities into my classroom, introduce a professional learning session for teachers, and to develop a unit plan that can be used in our school."

"This is hands-down the most valuable professional development experience I have ever undertaken. To work with such experienced professionals and learn dozens and dozens of practical activities in a dedicated environment where we don't have to worry about emails or time restraints was such a blessing. I've learnt enough activities to completely overhaul all of my text-focused units and make them so much more engaging and accessible for students at every literacy level."
