WATCH: To Emcee or not to Emcee? Hip-hop, Shakespeare and Questioning

Stream Charlie Thomson's session at the 2021 Bell Shakespeare National Teacher Conference with the Teacher Membership.

Runtime: 50 mins

Based on his award-winning thesis, “The Power of the Question!”: How hip-hop pedagogy can reveal a discourse of questioning in Shakespeare education and Hamlet,” Charlie Thomson AKA The Educator presents this dynamic and engaging session. With years of experience as both hip-hop artist and classroom teacher, Thomson will address how teachers can incorporate hip-hop pedagogy into Shakespeare education.

Thomson's thesis about Who’s There?, a 12-song hip-hop album based on the questions in Hamlet, explores how a hip-hop pedagogical approach could assist contemporary Australian educators to engage students in the works of Shakespeare and foster a discourse of questioning in the classroom. How do the 5 elements of hip-hop culture relate to Shakespeare and how does Shakespeare and hip-hop encourage questioning? Thomson will also speak to his experiences as a recipient of Bell Shakespeare's Regional Teacher Mentorship.
